CD117 (c-kit)

CD117, also known as c-kit, is a transmembrane protein expressed on hematopoietic stem / progenitor cells, interstitial cell of Cajal, mammalian ductal epithelia, melanocytes, and basal cells of skin. The antibody labels CD117 (c-kit) in both normal and neoplastic cells.

Intended use

It is a useful tool for differentiating between gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) and other intra-abdominal mesenchymal tumors when used with a panel of antibodies.

Assessment criteria
A strong predominantly membranous, but also cytoplasmic staining of mast cells
An at least moderate, predominantly membranous but also cytoplasmic staining reaction of virtually all Cajal cells in the appendiceal muscularis propria
No staining reaction of smooth muscle cells
