BCL6

BCL2 is a mitochondrial membrane protein expressed in lymphoid tissues (B-cells in mantle zone, interfollicular T-cell areas, and very few cells in the germinal center), and basal cells of epithelial tissue. BCL6 is expressed in germinal center B-cells, some CD4 positive T-cells, and thymocytes on cortex of thymus.

Intended use

BCL6 labels in both normal and neoplastic lymphocytes. It is useful for classifying B-cell lymphomas, especially diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), follicular lymphoma, and Burkitt lymphoma, when used with a panel with other antibodies.

Assessment criteria
A moderate to strong distinct nuclear staining reaction of virtually all normal germinal centre B-cells in the tonsil
At least weak to moderate distinct nuclear staining reaction of the majority of the squamous epithelial cells in the tonsil
*In the mantle zones and interfollicular areas only dispersed cells should display a positive nuclear staining reaction
