It is a useful tool for differentiating primary versus metastatic tumors in lung and thyroid.

Assessment criteria
A strong, distinct nuclear staining reaction of all follicular epithelial cells in thyroid. A weak cytoplasmic staining reaction can be seen in the cytoplasmic compartment and in the extracellular colloids
An at least weak to moderate, distinct nuclear staining reaction of the vast majority of columnar luminal epithelial cells of the terminal bronchioles in the normal lung
No staining should be seen in tonsil
