CD163 is a membrane protein that has anti-inflammatory functions and is expressed by cells of the monocyte/macrophage lineage

Intended use

It is found in a majority of acute myeloid leukemia cases with monocytoid differentiation and histiocytic sarcoma. Anti-CD163 antibody is a useful tool for classifying neoplasms of myeloid and macrophage/monocyte origin when used with a panel of other antibodies

Assessment criteria
A moderate to strong and distinct cytoplasmic staining of the germinal centre macrophages in the dark zones of the secondary follicles in the tonsil
A moderate to strong cytoplasmic staining of the macrophages in the interfollicular zones of the tonsil
No staining in epithelial cells of appendix
