Melan A

Melan A, also known as Melanoma Antigen Recognized by T-cell 1 (MART-1), is a transmembrane protein expressed in skin, melanocytes, and steroid producing cells. Melan A is detected in melanomas and
angiomyolipomas. The antibody labels Melan A protein in both normal and neoplastic cells.

Intended use

It is a useful tool for identifying melanomas when using with a panel of antibodies

Assessment criteria
Strong, distinct cytoplasmic staining reaction of virtually all melanocytes in skin.
A weak to moderate reaction in the melanocytic dendrites in most melanocytes
No staining in the epithelial cells of tubulus in kidney
* Scattered epithelial cells may show a granular staining reaction caused by lipofuscin
