Tryptase is a trypsin-like neutral serine proteinase stored predominantly in secretory granules of mast cells and basophils, and upon cellular activation is released into the extracellular environment.
Intended use
Tryptase may therefore be used as a marker for mast cells and basophils and an indicator for their activation/degranulation. Anti-tryptase antibody is also a useful tool for identifying reactive mast cell hyperplasia, mast cell leukemia, and mastocytosis, when used with a panel of antibodies.
