E-Cadherin

E-cadherin is a transmembrane cell adhesion glycoprotein that is critical for epithelial junction formation. E-cadherin is expressed in a majority epithelial cells. The expression of E-cadherin may be decreased or lost in malignant tumors.

Intended use

E-cadherin is positive in breast ductal carcinoma and negative in lobular carcinoma. E-cadherin is useful for differentiating between ductal and lobular breast carcinomas when used with a panel of antibodies.

Assessment criteria
A strong, distinct membranous staining reaction of virtually all the columnar epithelial cells in appendix
A strong, distinct membranous staining reaction of the epithelial cells of the bile ducts in the liver
An at least a weak to moderate membranous staining reaction of the hepatocytes in the liver
No staining reaction must be seen in stromal cells such as lymphocytes, plasma cells, smooth muscle cells or endothelial cells in appendix
