Cytokeratin 8/18 (LMW)

Cytokeratins 8 and 18 are low molecular weight (LMW) cytokeratins and are often co-expressed and comprise the primary keratin pair in simple epithelia, such as can be found in the liver and intestine. Cytokeratin 18 is also expressed in glandular and transitional epithelial cells, and the Cytokeratin 8/18 antibody cocktail therefore labels most epithelia other than the stratified type.

Intended use

This antibody cocktail also labels many epitheliaderived tumor cells, and thus is useful for the identification/classification of adeno-carcinomas and most squamous cell carcinomas when used with a panel of antibodies.

Assessment criteria
A moderate to strong, predominantly cytoplasmic staining reaction of all columnar epithelial cells in appendix
An at least weak to moderate predominantly membranous staining reaction of virtually all hepatocytes in liver
No staining should be seen in the vast majority of lymphocytes, the endothelial cells and the well preserved squamous epithelial cells in tonsil
